Pamela,

This past week, conservatives in the House passed their so-called 'SAVE America' Act — one of the biggest threats to voting rights in a generation. If enacted, this legislation would upend free and fair elections by imposing unnecessary burdens upon millions of voters.

Here's a quick recap of what this bill would do:

• Require voters provide very specific proof of residency and citizenship — like a birth certificate or passport — to register to vote.
• Force Americans to show photo ID to vote while narrowing the list of acceptable IDs in most states, excluding student IDs.
• Mandate election officials purge voter rolls every 30 days, a move that could mistakenly remove eligible voters.
• End universal mail-in voting, forcing voters to apply to receive a vote-by-mail ballot.

Let's be clear: The SAVE Act solves a problem that doesn't exist. Non-citizens are already prohibited from voting. This is a blatant attempt to suppress the vote of millions of legally eligible U.S. citizens.

The bill is now advancing to the Senate, where reports indicate anti-democracy lawmakers have 50 votes lined up. Some senators even want to get rid of the filibuster to pass this radical bill.

We can't let anti-democracy extremists get away with disenfranchising voters. President Obama has called on all of us to do what we can to stop this legislation.
