Urge the U.S. men's hockey team: Apologize to the U.S. women's hockey team and show solidarity by refusing to attend Trump's State of the Union address!
Dear MoveOn member,
The clip of FBI Director Kash Patel partying with the U.S. men's hockey team as President Donald Trump mocked the Olympic and history-making U.S. women's team has now gone viral.1 Trump and Patel—along with the laughing athletes in the locker room—made their opinion crystal clear: This is a boy's club and women don't belong.
It's unacceptable and we have to speak out.
Will you sign the petition demanding that the U.S. men's hockey team issue a public apology and support the women's team by skipping the State of the Union address?
The U.S. women's hockey team set the standard, winning the gold medal earlier in the week—paving the way for the teams to score a dual win in the same Olympics for the first time ever.2 And the U.S. women's team also made history as 22-year-old Laila Edwards became not only the first Black woman on the U.S. Olympic team, but the first Black woman on any team to win an Olympic gold medal for hockey.3
And what did the women's team do after their incredible victory? They showed up to the men's hockey game to cheer them on, only to have to hear their fellow Team USA members mock them in the locker room afterwards. It's shameful.
As Patel threw his head back and chugged beer—on the taxpayer dime—Trump invited the men's hockey team to the State of the Union, following it with: "I must tell you, we're gonna have to bring the women's team, you do know that. I do believe I probably would be impeached."4 The room of men laughed at the idea.
The women's hockey team declined an invitation to attend the State of the Union. Now the men's hockey team must apologize publicly and do the same.5
Add your name to the petition to demand that they publicly apologize and show solidarity by refusing to attend Trump's State of the Union address on Tuesday!
Trump, Patel, and the U.S. men's hockey team have faced backlash for their dismissive and sexist remarks. But so far, no apology has been issued.
We're disappointed but not surprised. The comments are indicative of the misogynistic culture that pervasively undermines women's talent and skill in the field of sports. Trump and MAGA republicans want to weaponize women's sports to wrongfully vilify and scapegoat trans and nonbinary athletes, meanwhile they treat women's sport as a joke—even as women excel at the highest level of their craft and bring home the gold for our country.6
The "locker room talk" that we caught a glimpse of is part of the same culture that systemically harms women. We need men to speak out when women athletes are being disrespected—not validate misogyny with their laughter.
Every single member of the U.S. men's hockey team owes the women's team an apology. And they need to follow their apology with action. Will you sign the petition?
It's even more egregious to know that as FBI director, Patel is supposed to be leading the investigation into the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie—mother of "Today" show co-host Savannah Guthrie.7
Patel has already faced criticism for his mishandling of the investigation. But instead of doing everything in his power to treat his position with the authority and seriousness it warrants, he is partying and chugging beer with the U.S. men's hockey team. And taxpayers are footing the bill for his expensive joyride to Milan.8
We refuse to legitimize a boy's club that mocks women while stripping away the rights of women, trans, and non-binary athletes. And the U.S. men's hockey shouldn't legitimize it either. Sign the petition now!
Thanks for all you do.
