"Georgia lawmakers fight GOP voter suppression efforts with new state voting rights act" —Democracy Docket Pamela, it's time to build a firewall. The freedom to vote is under attack from Congress, the White House, and the Supreme Court — which may be on the verge of once again gutting the Voting Rights Act. But we aren't powerless to fight back. We don't have to wait around for the next shoe to drop. And we're not just standing by. Across the South, we're proud to work alongside leaders who are already taking action to shore up free and fair elections. Lawmakers in Alabama and Louisiana are considering state-level versions of the Voting Rights Act. And this past Thursday, Georgia lawmakers officially introduced The Henry McNeal Turner Voting Rights Act. These states are taking action, because if Washington won't protect the freedom to vote, states must act. Across the South, organizers are fighting to pass these bills. But to get it done, we all must raise our voices. Add your name to say you support passing new Voting Rights Acts at the state level — and we'll send you updates on how you can help get these new affirmative protections over the finish line. Here in Georgia, where voters have dealt with constant rule changes and repeated attacks on access, the newly introduced Henry McNeal Turner Voting Rights Act would... -
Set statewide protections against voter suppression and vote dilution -
Create a Georgia Voting Rights Commission -
Establish guardrails like preclearance, transparency, language access, and enforcement tools so voting rules are fair, consistent, and accountable All in all, the bill would provide stability, ensure real accountability, and increase transparency to foster trust in our elections. Here's how Georgia State Senator Nikki Merritt described the need for this legislation: "People should not need insider knowledge or perfect transportation or flexible working hours or law degrees just to participate in our democracy and vote...Voting should be easy. It should be consistent, it should be fair." Let's get it done. By continuing to fight for state-level Voting Rights Acts in places like Georgia we can keep on combating discriminatory, exclusionary policies. And we can make sure our democracy actually represents the will of the people. This work couldn't be more urgent as the Supreme Court chips away at our voting rights, as restrictive bills move through states and Congress, and as Donald Trump calls to rig voting maps and "take over" elections. Free and fair elections are under attack — but we can fight back by passing key protections at the state level. Add your name to say you're a part of this fight, and say you agree that voters, not politicians, should hold the ultimate power in our democracy. In solidarity, The Fair Fight Action Team |
