SIGN NOW: One megacorporation shouldn't control what local news you can watch. Speak out to STOP the Nexstar-TEGNA merger and protect your right to independent journalism you can trust >>
Pamela, the news you see on TV is up to just a few multibillion-dollar companies – and one of them is trying to grow EVEN bigger.
Right now, Nexstar is trying to acquire TEGNA. You might not have heard of either company – but if this deal goes through, the new megacorporation would control enough local TV stations to reach 4 out of 5 households. [1]
And here's what to expect when Nexstar buys your local network: mass layoffs [2] and blatant propaganda – including segments urging the public to support special government favors for companies like Nexstar! [3]
Hundreds of local TV stations would be under one corporate roof. With that power comes the ability to drive up Americans' cable bills by hundreds of millions of dollars, slash newsroom jobs, and dictate what viewers like you can watch in communities across the country.
That's bad news for democracy – which is why Congress has already put limits on how big a company like Nexstar can get. But now, Trump and his handpicked FCC Chairman, Brendan Carr, are demanding a special carve-out from those rules for Nexstar. [4]
Sign the Petition: Congress and the FCC must say NO to the Nexstar-TEGNA merger – and protect local news >>
If this merger goes through, it would be a disaster for our democracy.
Fewer, bigger companies controlling our news means less diverse viewpoints, less accountability, and more room for political and corporate influence to shape what we see.
And shrinking independent newsrooms means fewer investigations, less scrutiny of those in power, and a total hollowing-out of coverage about city halls, school boards, and local emergencies.
When one company has this much power over the news in community after community, the truth becomes whatever they say it is.
That's exactly the kind of power grab Trump and his allies want – and I'm worried what corporate executives will offer in exchange for the special permission their merger deal needs.
Add your name: Tell Congress and the FCC to say no to the Nexstar-TEGNA merger >>
We can't let this deal go through. The public deserves real local journalism – not corporate scripts handed down from a national office.
Thanks for all you do,
