Pamela, we need to be honest with ourselves in this moment.
It's important to understand the full implications of what this administration is trying to do and the threat it poses to the basic freedoms of every American. We're witnessing a deliberate attempt to erode values and norms that have made our country free and prosperous.
But it's not enough to simply recognize the threats we face. We also have to be clear about the power we have in a moment like this.
The most important title in America isn't president or senator or governor — it's citizen. In this country, we the people have the power to determine the path forward.
Right now, some politicians have it twisted. They think they have the right to pick who their voters are so they can unfairly lock in their power in the next election.
They're wrong. And it's up to us to fight back against these attacks on our democracy.
Pamela, that's why we need you in this fight. We can't just wring our hands. We can't let cynicism get the best of us. It's our job, as Americans, to go out and do something about it. To speak out. To vote. To organize our neighbors and to understand that our best hope of solving this problem is by working together.
You know that I've always believed in that creed written in our founding documents and carried forward through generations: "Yes we can." And in a year like this, it takes on an even greater meaning.
