Pamela, big news: after Common Cause filed a lawsuit to stop Donald Trump’s $1.8 billion slush fund, backed by thousands of members like you speaking out, the Administration is reportedly retreating. [1]
You’re a Common Cause member, so I’m sure you’ve been following this story, but just to recap:
First, Trump sued the IRS – which he controls – for $10 billion. Common Cause immediately sounded the alarm, taking legal action to disrupt his Department of Justice’s plan to rubber-stamp it and activating our members to demand Congress stop this scheme.
Then, he struck a phony settlement to take $1.8 billion of YOUR tax dollars to pay January 6th insurrectionists – money that should be going to serve the American people, not Trump's cronies.
So, Common Cause took immediate action, collecting over 180,000 petition signatures and filing a lawsuit to stop this unconstitutional cash grab.
Now, thanks to public outcry YOU helped create, we’re hearing that the Trump Administration may be abandoning this fund altogether. [2]
Why’d we pick this fight? It’s hardly the most dangerous action from an administration that’s starting illegal wars and kidnapping our neighbors.
But Pamela, we took a big, early bet that this story was the single most effective way to show EVERY American who Donald Trump really works for: himself. And it paid off – the public pressure we helped generate could help end this slush fund.
We’ll keep our foot on the gas – keeping up our legal case to ensure this crooked deal is gone for good and encouraging our members to speak out.
We’re hosting a press conference and rally tomorrow with senators, small business leaders, and January 6th police officers to make it clear: Congress needs to act swiftly to prevent corrupt misuses of public funds.
Common Cause is YOUR watchdog against the corrupt authoritarians who want to destroy everything our country is supposed to stand for.
And today’s big retreat by Trump proves it: with your help, we can and will stop them and move our country forward to the democracy we all deserve.
Thanks for all you do,
The team at Common Cause
P.S. We’re able to take on and win fights like these because members like you contribute what they can to make it possible. If you agree these fights are worth the effort – and want Common Cause to keep showing up when it counts – will you chip in today?
