Take action to prevent millions of currently eligible voters from losing their right to vote.

SIGN: Demand that every senator VOTE NO on voter restrictions that would prohibit millions of Americans from participating in our elections! Dear MoveOn member, Last week, the House of Representatives passed a bill that would make it impossible for millions of currently eligible voters to vote in future elections.1 If passed into law, the so-called SAVE America Act would be the most restrictive voter bill in modern history. Mirrored after the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act (SAVE), the bill does the exact opposite of its name. The bill requires proof of U.S. citizenship to register or reregister to vote in the form of a passport or original birth certificate. The problem is 21 million American citizens of voting age do not have ready access to proof of citizenship and over half of Americans do not have a passport.2 And Republicans know that—they are intentionally trying to disenfranchise millions of voters and sow distrust in our elections process. Now the bill goes to the Senate. And Republicans are so intent on passing this bill that they have publicly explored amending the filibuster to get the bill to Trump's desk to sign into law.3 We need to be relentless in our efforts to ensure that enough Senators reject this bill before millions lose access to the ballot and the right to choose their leaders. Our voting rights and the future of free and fair elections are on the line. Will you sign the petition to urge every senator to reject this despicable anti-voter bill? Here's what the SAVE America Action would do: Eliminate online voter registration, requiring in-person registration4 Require proof of citizenship to register (a drivers license wouldn't count)5 Require registering to vote with your birth certificate if you got married and changed your last name6 Would hold volunteer election workers criminally liable if they made mistakes7 Mandate that your personal information be submitted to Trump's Department of Homeland Security database8 Senators and every American need to see this bill for what it is—a power grab from Republicans and Trump to maintain power while they spread lies and debunked misinformation undermining our elections and vilifying our immigrant neighbors. Demand that our senators vote NO on the most restrictive voter bill in modern history! Say you change your address and need to update your voter registration. Currently, you can do this online, but if the bill passes, you'd have to show up in person with your passport or birth certificate. For the majority of people, this would likely mean finding transportation and taking off from work. And what if you don't have these documents? You cannot register and therefore you cannot vote. The intention of this restrictive bill is to make it harder for people to vote, point blank. Republicans in Congress are exploiting lies that they created about immigrants and our election system to disenfranchise millions and cling to power. It's sick. Republicans want to simply brand these bills as "voter ID laws", but it's B.S. and they know it. In addition to shutting down online voter registration and requiring restrictive documents to prove your citizenship, the bill also mandates that states submit a voter's personal information to a national database that would be maintained by the Department of Homeland Security.9 This comes after the Department of Justice has been hounding Democratic-run states to hand over its voter rolls and Trump has called for elections to be nationalized.10 Trump and MAGA Republicans know they are losing public support—and so they are suppressing our votes to rig elections in their favor. This is incredibly dangerous. Will you sign the petition to make it clear that constituents will not allow our fundamental voting rights to be eroded by this administration? In this country, voters choose their leaders. Not the other way around. Every American must speak out against this heinous abuse of power. Our elected officials should in the business of promoting civic participation, not enacting unnecessary hurdles based on their conspiracy theories that are convenient for them maintaining power. The requirement to present these documents when registering or reregistering to vote could mean a great nuisance for some, but for others, it could mean barriers that are too high or impossible to overcome. It would particularly impact low-income voters and the millions upon millions of people who have ever changed their last name through marriage, as well as young people, people living in rural communities, people living on tribal lands, unhoused people, and, disproportionately, people of color. Republicans want to take us back to a time when only wealthy white people could vote. But we've fought for too much to allow that to happen.
