John Lewis’ legacy

We must keep working to defend and advance these accomplishments

Pamela,

During Black History Month, and all year long, we're honored to celebrate the rich culture, resilience, and impact of Black Americans.

And we recognize a proud legacy of pushing our nation towards its democratic ideals by commemorating the freedom fighters who organized, marched, bled, and died for the sacred right to vote.

One of those heroes was John Lewis. Before serving as a Congressman, he was a major force in the Civil Rights Movement as a Freedom Rider, chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, and a leader of the march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge on Bloody Sunday, which helped pave the way for the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

His legacy endures as we continue to make good trouble in his honor and fight for his vision of a more just democracy.

That's because we know that his mission isn't just a part of history.

It's still necessary in the present. And what we do today will shape the future of our democracy — and the survival of free and fair elections in America.

This year, the Voting Rights Act could once again be gutted by the Supreme Court, which could pave the way for a new wave of racially discriminatory redistricting that slashes representation for Black Americans — eliminating up to 30% of the current seats held by members of the Congressional Black Caucus.

The SAVE Act — a modern-day poll tax — could disenfranchise tens of millions of Americans, particularly impacting communities of color, if it's passed through the Senate.

And around the country, anti-voter extremists continue to try to restrict access to the ballot box in order to avoid true accountability from an electorate that is as diverse as America.

We will keep on fighting back to support equal access to the ballot box. And your support helps combat the suppression and centuries-long silencing of Black voters in the United States as we work to ensure every voter's voice is heard.

Together, we'll continue mobilizing for fair maps that ensure fair representation for all voters, rallying Americans in key states to contact their swing-vote Senators and urge them to reject the SAVE Act, and organizing for voting rights protections to thwart attempts at voter suppression.

It's how we honor Black history. And it's how we ensure a more just future.

In solidarity,

The Fair Fight Action Team
