Pamela, Haitian Temporary Protected Status (TPS) is set to expire at the end of the day on February 3rd, unless the federal government acts. That deadline puts hundreds of thousands of our Haitian neighbors at risk of losing work authorization and becoming targets for detention and deportation.
The warning signs are already flashing.
-
In Springfield, Ohio, faith and community leaders say they have received "verified reports" that ICE will arrive February 3rd or 4th and remain for weeks;
-
In South Florida, local reporting also points to preparations for heightened enforcement tied to the TPS deadline;
-
Communities far beyond those headlines, including immigrant and refugee communities in places like South Dakota, are watching closely because when DHS picks a target, it rarely stops with just one city.
Here is how you can help fight back right now…
A discharge petition in the House can force action to protect Haitian TPS. This is one of the few tools that can break through leadership inaction and delay. It will take 218 House signatures to succeed, regardless of what Speaker Mike Johnson tries to pull.
Take action now: Tell your Representative to sign the discharge petition to protect Haitian TPS >>
TPS exists for moments exactly like this: when sending people "back" means sending them into danger, instability, and potentially even death. Yet the administration is moving forward anyway, even as Haiti remains gripped by a deepening crisis.
We have been standing witness against ICE abductions and deportations and organizing alongside communities to defend our neighbors' rights and dignity. Last year, when our allies at The Workers Circle began vigils outside of Alligator Alcatraz, they specifically warned that TPS holders would be a new target of this administration. We are devastated to see that prediction become reality.
But right now is not the time for despair. Now is the time for action. The most time-sensitive thing you can do is simple: pressure your Representative to sign the discharge petition and force a vote before the February 3 deadline. Will you answer the call?
In solidarity,
Mike Phelan,
