Mike Rogers Earned $420,000 From Firm Now Helping Hegseth Plan Iran War‘s Next PhaseAfter leaving Congress, Mike Rogers received lucrative board fees from MITRE, a consultancy tapped by Pete Hegseth to help plan the future of warfare.
Story by Tom Perkins Mike Rogers, the Republican candidate for U.S. Senate in Michigan, earned over $420,000 during his tenure as a board member for a consultancy that is now helping Pete Hegseth plan the next phase of the disastrous Iran war, according to tax filings. The MITRE Corporation is coordinating the controversial Project Meridian: “The Future of Warfare,” which is bringing together weapons manufacturers and tech leaders like Elon Musk to map out the future of U.S. warfare in Iran and beyond. Some have raised questions over conflicts of interest among those leading the project. Rogers, an establishment war hawk and former member of Congress, served on MITRE’s board of trustees, including a stint as its chair, for six years through 2023. He left as he launched his first campaign for U.S. Senate during the 2024 election. The company’s CEO said Rogers was brought on for his “vast national security expertise,” and IRS records detail his annual earnings. Rogers’ support for the operation in Iran has been a liability throughout the race against his opponent, Democrat Abdul El-Sayed. “People say, well, ‘What date is it going to end?’ It shouldn’t be a date. It should be conditional,” Rogers told a right wing podcast host in March. “This is why Americans need to stop for a minute, come together and say, ‘let’s get this done, get it done right.’” The war is among the drivers of stubborn, ongoing inflation and high gas prices, and polls show as many as 67% of Michigan voters disapprove of it. El-Sayed has hammered Rogers over his support for endless wars, and Rogers in recent weeks waffled on the operation in Iran, telling Fox News that “we need to start wrapping it down.” The El-Sayed and Rogers campaigns did not respond to requests for comment. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth on Sept. 30 announced the MITRE-led Project Meridian as “an effort led by America’s best minds to study the future of warfare.” Hegseth named Musk, former Republican Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich, and Palmer Luckey, founder of defense technology company Anduril Industries, as top officials. Former defense officials noted to NPR that the project’s leaders could guide the U.S. to build more space assets or rely more on drones that Musk’s and Luckey’s companies produce, while making fewer tanks or other military equipment that they do not make. Musk is among Rogers’ largest supporters, backing him via the America PAC that Musk finances. “There are a lot of issues impacting this race, but everyone understands that the Iran war is a primary reason for the high cost of gasoline and diesel,” said Bernie Porn, a Michigan pollster who found El-Sayed with a small lead over Rogers in late August. “And that is why you see states like Iowa and Kansas in play, so this is one more thing to tie Rogers to support for the Iran war.” Tom Perkins is a freelance reporter in Detroit who covers the antiwar movement locally and nationally. Mike Rogers Earned $420,000 From Firm Now Helping Hegseth Plan Iran War‘s Next Phase
Forward this for me: Ohio deserves better
Forward this for me: Ohio deserves betterMy opponent and Republicans have contempt for working people. Tomorrow they’ll have to answer to voters of all political stripes.
Hey everybody, my team needs to make the call on our final voter outreach budget in a bit and I’m told we’re still coming up short. You can help make sure we don’t need to scale back our efforts in the final hours of the campaign by making a donation right now. If this year feels different, you’re not imagining it. Donald Trump won Ohio by a double-digit margin in 2024. But tomorrow, we’re taking it back and giving working people a voice in Washington. My opponent has spent the last two years in the Senate with real power to make people’s lives better. When given the opportunity to address voters’ concerns – gas, groceries, tariffs, health care – he votes to help The Money over The Many. Every time. That negligence would be bad enough, but I think it’s even worse. Jon Husted, Vivek Ramaswamy, JD Vance – and the crypto, pharma, oil, data center, and FirstEnergy guys bankrolling them – have real contempt for working people. Husted said, we’ve got to end this war. Two weeks later, he voted to continue it. To date, he has voted 14 times to keep this war going. He told a woman with a disabled daughter, I will never cut Medicaid. Two weeks later, he voted to cut Medicaid. He has voted 9 times to raise your health care costs. Why would he tell people to their faces that he was going to do something to help, and then turn around and do the opposite? Why would he say Ohioans’ “work ethic is broken”? It’s contempt. It’s not hard to know what Ohioans need and want. Husted can see it – and still he votes the other way. So now, Republicans have spent $320 million trying to convince Ohio voters that their real concerns aren’t as important as whatever nasty new attack about me they’re putting on the air that week. On November 3, Jon Husted will have to answer to Ohioans of all political stripes about the job he’s done. Because it wasn’t Ohio voters who voted for the war. We didn’t vote for fertilizer prices nearly doubling, diesel going up dramatically, food prices higher than ever, gas prices, same thing. Voters didn’t vote for the health care premium hikes that led to 160,000 people in Ohio dropping coverage. We didn’t vote for the Medicaid cuts, or for what’s happening to rural hospitals here. Jon Husted did that. And voters know it. We have just 1 day left. This election will be won by things we can’t fully measure, like the conversations you’re having with your neighbors, friends, colleagues, or family. I want you to tell them: Help is on the way. We’re going to end this war, end the tariffs, and ban health insurance companies from denying care that your doctors say you need. Tell them we’re working to make it illegal for drug companies to charge them more than they do in other countries – the same pill should be the same price. Tell them I’m taking on Big Tech, Jon Husted is just taking their money. I’m going to be out across Ohio talking to voters about the choice in this election. You’ve been with me and I’m so grateful. If you have time to volunteer with us to get out the vote, or have those pivotal conversations, or make a donation to keep our ads up and make sure our field operation is the strongest it can be – we’re going to win. Thank you for being part of this, and even more, for caring about all of this. It matters. In solidarity, Sherrod Brown Before you click away! Republican spending in Ohio has reached $320 million, and Sherrod Brown is counting on your support to keep up. We can’t outspend them, but we can outwork them.
