| Petition to the U.S. Senate We urge you to oppose the SAVE Act and all other voter suppression measures. The SAVE Act is a threat to our voting rights and our democracy. |
After the Trump administration threw Minneapolis into violent, lawless chaos with ICE and Border Patrol, Pam Bondi wrote a letter to Minnesota's leaders under the guise of trying to establish so-called law and order.
One of Bondi's demands stood out: a request for "access" to Minnesota's state voter rolls. Minnesota's Secretary of State rejected the DOJ demand and called it an "outrageous attempt to coerce Minnesota into giving the federal government private data on millions of U.S. citizens in violation of state and federal law."
Trump is trying to rig the midterm elections from every angle. His plan includes one of the worst voter suppression bills in modern history: the SAVE Act. The bill would add a "show your papers" requirement to register to vote, forcing people to produce specific paperwork proving citizenship and potentially disenfranchising 20 million people.

The SAVE Act already passed the House, and Trump urged Senate Republicans to pass the legislation before the midterms. In front of GOP lawmakers recently, Trump said, "You want to have Voter ID. You want to insist on it. You want to insist on it."
Bondi's demand for MN voter rolls isn't the first time the Trump administration has tried to get states to turn over private voter information. At least 11 states have complied with similar requests — all states at least partly run by Republicans. Election and democracy experts have called the federal voter data grab highly unusual and disturbing.
The horrific ICE attacks in Minneapolis and Trump's bid to suppress the vote with the SAVE Act are fueled by far-right anti-immigrant propaganda and conspiracy theories. The Senate must take a stand for free and fair elections and reject the SAVE Act.
