| Welcome to Bad News Weekly, your rundown of key attacks on voting rights and independent elections across the country – it’s a way to keep up with what the opponents of democracy are up to. We’ll highlight some of the worst anti-voter efforts, with a spotlight on the South, the original frontline in the fight for voting rights, and still its fiercest. “The trust has been absolutely destroyed.” – Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows (D) on recent activities from federal officials.
AZ Could Be The Trump Regime’s Next Target As The Unsealed Affidavit In Fulton County Revealed That It Relied On Debunked Claims And Election Conspiracy Theorists: The unsealed affidavit the FBI used to seize 2020 ballots and other election materials from Fulton County, Georgia relied on claims that have been repeatedly debunked, including by state investigators who the FBI allegedly did not reach out to for copies of their prior investigations. The affidavit also states that the FBI’s inquiry began because of a complaint from Kurt Olsen, who played an integral role in Trump’s efforts to overturn his loss in 2020 and now works in the White House. It further relies on known election conspiracy theorists, including Kevin Moncla, whose complaints have been dismissed by the Georgia State Election Board. There have recently been indications that Arizona might be the next target of the Trump regime; John Solomon, a right-wing commentator, claimed on Steve Bannon’s War Room that “you will see a similar type operation soon in Arizona.”
SAVE America Act Passed US House: In a mostly party-line vote, the US House passed the SAVE America Act, a new version of the SAVE Act that would require voters to provide documentary proof of citizenship when they register to vote and valid photo ID to vote. The bill would also direct states to run their voter information through the Department of Homeland Security’s controversial SAVE tool that has made persistent mistakes. According to research from the Brennan Center, more than 21 million Americans lack ready access to documents to prove citizenship. The SAVE America Act now heads to the Senate, where it seems unlikely to pass due to the filibuster.
NC • Judge Ruled Against College Students Seeking On-Campus Early Voting Sites: US District Judge William Osteen Jr ruled against a coalition of college students from three North Carolina universities who sought to force the state to host early voting sites on their college campuses. Osteen wrote that it would potentially be impossible to force universities to host early voting sites only days before the start of the early voting period, which began on February 12, and that the plaintiffs were not likely to succeed on the merits of their claims, stating that “this court does not find the burdens on plaintiffs to be severe.”

America First Policy Institute Took Credit For Writing SAVE America Act While the Election Integrity Network Celebrated Its Founder Cleta Mitchell’s “Relentless Work” “Getting It Through the House”: In an email sent to reporters, America First Policy Institute’s (AFPI) communications director claimed that its election integrity director Thomas Lane “personally drafted and added” the bill’s voter ID and voter roll maintenance provisions. Lane previously served as a staffer in the Trump 2020 campaign and was involved in the fake electors plot in Arizona. The Election Integrity Network (EIN) thanked the two main sponsors of the SAVE America Act, Rep Chip Roy and Sen Mike Lee, as well as Cleta Mitchell, the founder and chair of EIN, for their “relentless work advancing the SAVE America Act and getting it through the House.” Mitchell previously urged Congress to pass a “Super SAVE Act,” and even helped write the original version of the SAVE Act.
RNC Asked US Supreme Court to Consider PA Undated and Misdated Mail Ballots Case: The Republican National Committee (RNC) petitioned the US Supreme Court to reverse an appeals court ruling that requires Pennsylvania to count undated and misdated mail ballots. The August appeals court ruling found that the state’s instruction to not count ballots that have undated or misdated outer return envelopes imposes an unconstitutional burden on the states’ voters right to vote.
