This isn’t getting enough attention, Pamela:
The Trump administration is trying a backdoor way to block entire states from voting by mail in the midterm elections — that is, of course, unless they hand over sensitive voter information to the White House:
“The U.S. Postal Service has proposed a new rule that would allow it to refuse to deliver mail ballots in states that don’t turn over voter rolls to the federal government…"
“Withholding some mail services in states where voters rely heavily on mail balloting could affect millions of Americans. And most of those affected would likely be Democrats, who disproportionately vote by mail.” —The New York Times

The Supreme Court just slapped down one attempt to restrict mail-in voting when it ruled that states can legally count ballots cast by Election Day, even if they’re received later.
But the White House’s strategy is undeniable, and we should call it exactly what it is: brazen voter suppression. Millions of Americans depend on voting by mail, including service members stationed abroad, students away at college, and people who are disabled or home-bound.
And it’s a shameless power grab — an attempt by the executive branch to dictate how elections are run, even though the Constitution says that power belongs to the states and to Congress.
What comes next: Pro-democracy groups are challenging the Trump administration’s attacks in court.
And at Redistricting Action, we know that anti-democracy forces are going to keep coming after voting rights, so we can’t rest — not even for a moment.
No matter what, we will continue…
- Sharing information with voters to make sure they have up-to-date information about how to cast their ballots
- Organizing to restore voting rights protections under the law
- Mobilizing to stop new gerrymanders and ensure fair elections
But we’ve still got a critical grassroots fundraising goal to hit before Tuesday’s big quarterly budget deadline — and the amount we raise has a direct impact on the work we’re able to do to defend democracy.
Thank you,
The Redistricting Action Team
