Pamela: Trump's illegal war on Iran just entered its sixth month and shows no signs of slowing. A brief pause in the violence quickly collapsed this week, with strikes reported in Iran, Jordan, Egypt, and Iraq. At least seventeen U.S. servicemembers have died. At least 1,700 people in Iran have been killed. At least $100 billion has been wasted.
Congress never authorized this war. More than that, Congress ordered Trump to end it through a historic war powers vote. But once again, Trump returned to the playbook he’s most familiar with — violence.
Instead of demanding accountability, Republican leaders are moving forward toward a record-shattering $1.5 trillion Pentagon budget Trump can use to wage more war. They’d do it at the expense of social service programs — food assistance, healthcare, and more — that millions of people across the country rely on.
It’s a dangerous moment, one that’s made it clear that you get what you pay for: Investing trillions of dollars in war over the last several decades has gotten us exactly that. It’s past time we turn the tables, which is why we’re joining 15 organizations to demand investments in people instead.

Right now, we’re in the thick of a months-long legislative fight that will determine whether or not the Pentagon gets the brazen and wasteful trillion-dollar plus-up Trump and Pete Hegseth are demanding. It won't be decided in a single vote — which means we’ll have opportunities to stop it.
Our next chance could arrive in a matter of days, with reports indicating Senate Republican leadership may try to use reconciliation to jam through tens of billions of dollars to pay for Trump’s Iran war.
Lawmakers have listened to us when we’ve gotten loud before, Pamela. The National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), the bill that sets the Pentagon budget topline and typically receives widespread bipartisan support, barely passed the House and is currently stalled in the Senate.
We’ve set the stage to push back against a status quo that could reward Trump and Hegseth’s lawless Pentagon with trillions of taxpayer dollars, while families struggle to afford groceries, rent, and healthcare. Now, we need to dig even deeper to win our demands.
Every phone call, petition signature, and public show of opposition helps build pressure against treating another Pentagon budget increase as inevitable.
Instead of allowing Congress to hand Trump a $1.5 trillion check for more endless war that makes us all less safe, together, we can demand a different set of priorities. Together, let’s make it clear that what the United States needs is a budget that values healthcare over weapons, housing over handouts to contractors, and diplomacy over another generation of endless war.
