Canada is burning. Polluters should pay.

Climate change is making wildfires more frequent and more extreme. But who pays for the consequences?

Dear  Pamela, More than 800 wildfires are burning in Canada, destroying forests, homes, and air quality. As First Nation communities evacuate their homes, winds are spreading toxic smoke to New York, Boston, and across the Midwest.  Several large wildfires in Minnesota are amplifying the smog. It doesn’t help that it’s been extremely hot in the Northeast, and heat spreads wildfire smoke which turns skies orange. Climate change is making wildfires more frequent and more extreme. Oil companies knew this would happen, and lied about it. But who pays for the consequences?  “The sad truth is while Canada warms up, it’s still approving pipelines,” Brandi Morin writes. “It’s largely taxpayers — us — bankrolling a pipeline built to pump more of the exact emissions that are cooking the ground out from under communities like Collins.
