Dear MoveOn member,
Once again, Republicans in Congress are trying to make it harder for us to vote.
This week, the House of Representatives passed a federal photo ID requirement that is harsher than any existing state voter ID law. The photo ID requirement was snuck into an insider trading ban bill.1
They also voted to require people to prove their citizenship when registering to vote by providing documents that millions of eligible voters do not have with the passage of the National Defense Authorization Act.2
Republicans are sneaking key elements of the SAVE Act, the most egregious voter suppression bill in modern history, into other legislation to try and pass it before November’s election.
If Trump gets his way and the SAVE Act in any form passes in the Senate and becomes law, millions of eligible voters will not be able to vote in November.
The SAVE Act is designed to create unnecessary, costly hurdles for people to cast their ballots, requiring people to present a birth certificate or passport to prove their citizenship in order to register to vote.
Here’s who will be affected by the SAVE Act3:
The 21 million U.S. citizens of voting age who do not have proof of citizenship readily available.
More than half of Americans who do not have a passport, and passports are costly and time-consuming to obtain.
The millions who lack access to a paper copy of their birth certificate.
The 70 million people, primarily married women, who could be impacted because their name no longer matches their birth certificate.
Those who register to vote by mail.
Real leaders work to earn our vote. Authoritarians work to keep us from voting. This is about keeping voters from casting ballots, to maintain power. Not protecting our elections.
Sign the petition now to demand the Senate vote no on any legislation that includes any version of the SAVE Act and threatens our right to vote.
Thanks for all you do.
