Voter suppression then and now

The attacks on ballot access are no accident. That’s the plan.

Pamela,

When we vote, we can win — democracy’s foes have known that for ages.

Back in 1980, the founder of the Heritage Foundation — the think tank that would go on to invent Project 2025 — said, “Our leverage in the elections quite candidly goes up as the voting populace goes down.”

The multi-pronged assault anti-democracy forces are waging on access to the ballot box is not new. It has always been their plan.

As we approach this year’s consequential midterm elections, extremists are trying to limit who participates in order to move the country into a new political Jim Crow era. To fully understand the stakes of this moment, we have to understand what the freedom fighters before us were able to overcome so that we can do the same. Before diving in, I have to ask: Will you make a donation to help power our movement for free and fair elections and a truly representative democracy?

During the Jim Crow era from the late 19th century to the mid-20th century, systemic efforts to limit voter access for Black people looked like poll taxes, literacy tests, and gerrymandering.

Today, in 2026, anti-democracy politicians are using voter roll purges, reduced voting hours and locations, and, of course, more gerrymandering to prevent certain people from making their voices heard at the ballot box — and, no surprise, Black and brown voters are especially hurt by these schemes.

While the tactics and language may change, the goal remains the same: Reduce voter turnout to consolidate power and prevent marginalized groups from having a seat at the table.

The freedom fighters who came before us fought to overcome the massive voter suppression they faced, and we can do so again. The work we’re doing at Redistricting Action to oppose those who attack voting rights and restore fairness to our democracy has never been more urgent. Rush a donation today to help keep up the fight.

With gratitude,

Marina Jenkins
Executive Director
