The Associated Press is reporting that at least 18 detainees have died in ICE custody since January 1, 2026. But experts say that “many other deaths from natural causes likely would have been preventable with timely medical care.”
ICE detainees are kept in such horrible conditions that their health is collapsing. And to avoid liability – or the blame – ICE seems to be releasing people from detention just before they die.
To put it plainly: It’s extremely possible that ICE has been underreporting – or even not reporting – deaths in their custody. ICE has even stopped reporting the deaths of detainees who have recently been released. Under a new policy, these deaths don’t “count” and won’t be put on the books. But the thing is that these deaths are directly related to ICE.
This is yet another move away from accountability by both ICE and the Trump administration. It’s critical that we understand how many – and how – people die in ICE custody to fully understand what type of reform is needed at any and all levels of law enforcement.
Tell your representatives to demand that ICE be held accountable for their actions, no matter what they say or do.
