What does this campaign have to do with Ohio State football?

Football season is back!

I'm more partial to baseball, but Ohio State football is a way of life in this state, and I’m proud to be cheering on the Buckeyes this year as they fight to win another national championship.

Here's why I'm writing about college football in a campaign email.

When Ohio State played Texas a few weeks ago, 16 million people watched. It was the most-watched Week 2 college football game EVER. In Columbus, nearly half the households with a TV had the game on.

There's no other moment when this many Ohioans are so tuned in – which makes commercials during the game the best chance we get to reach voters who don't follow politics at all.

It's also the most expensive. A 30-second commercial on a normal Saturday afternoon in Columbus would take us back a few thousand dollars. But to afford one during the OSU game, it can cost many times that, even running up a bill of $100K+.

And the clock is running. Early voting starts in just 11 days, the polls are statistically tied, and Republicans are coordinating their spending to defeat me. They’re even pulling money out of other states so they can ramp up their attacks in Ohio.

Which brings me to today. Our fundraising deadline is at midnight, and we're not on track to hit our daily goal of $400,000. It’s crucial we meet goals like this if we want to air ads when it matters most – like this Saturday.
