Pamela: In the early morning hours one September day in 2024, Israeli warplanes dropped three 2,000-pound MK-84 bombs on displaced people’s tents in the crowded al-Mawasi ‘safe zone’ in southern Gaza. 19 people were killed. Dozens more were wounded. Three enormous craters were all that remained.[1]
Over the past three years, the Israeli military has routinely used these bombs — likely manufactured in Garland, Texas, by General Dynamics — which The New York Times reports, “shatter into razor-sharp fragments that can kill or incapacitate people over several hundred feet.”[2]
We know this paints a graphic image. We know it may be hard to read. But this is the horrific reality of a U.S. conveyor belt of bombs that arms the entire world. The one thing we cannot do is shy away from confronting and ending it.
Because as Trump pushes forward a slew of weapons sales to governments across the globe, more bombs may soon be on their way, including to the Israeli military.
Fortunately, it’s not up to Trump, and momentum is growing to block the sales of these bombs. Phone call after phone call, text after text, email after email, our team is furiously advocating to bring this nightmare to an end by pushing a growing coalition in Congress to act. Another newly reported deal could soon send $5 BILLION worth of Joint Direct Attack Munitions to the Saudi military. The Omani government could receive $188 million worth of Lockheed Martin-made F-16 sustainment services; and the Iraqi government could soon get $800 million worth of helicopters.[3]
The bombs and bullets sold in our name have had devastating consequences. They’re used by oppressive governments to kill their own people, sold on the black market in Yemen, have even wound up in the hands of the self-described Islamic State, and recently helped fuel a genocide in Gaza.
We’ve taken on these fights before, and won. During the first Trump administration, a bipartisan Senate majority passed joint resolutions of disapproval (JRD) blocking $8.1 billion in weapons sales to the Saudi and UAE governments. Under Biden, we got a hold on 2,000-pound bombs being delivered to the Israeli military.
But multi-billion-dollar weapons makers have spent millions on lobbying and campaign donations to ensure sales continue. They’re hoping you won’t look into where these weapons have ended up in the past, or how they’ve been used. They’re hoping you won’t speak out.
Unfortunately for them, Win Without War and our movement of partners and activists — including hundreds of thousands of people like you, Pamela — refuse to look away.
That includes ranking foreign affairs committee members Rep. Gregory Meeks and Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, currently holding up Trump’s bomb sale to the Israeli military, and Sen. Markey, who has introduced legislation to block the Saudi military sale. It’s a crucial start, but with lives on the line, we need to go further, fast.
