Pamela,
Let's say what millions of working people in California and across this country already know: This economy is rigged.
Americans work harder than ever and still can't keep up with the rent. Groceries cost more. Health care costs more — if you can still get it at all. And every time working people try to fix any of it, the billionaires at the top spend whatever it takes to shut us down.
This November, we have a chance to fight back.
Prop 40 would be the FIRST billionaire tax in the history of the United States. It asks roughly 200 California billionaires to pay a one-time 5% tax to keep clinics open, save health care jobs, and replace the health care money that Donald Trump's budget bill ripped away from working families.
Prop 40 is the important first step toward building an economy that works for everyone nationwide — not just for the top 1%.
But despite the fact that billionaires would get to keep 95% of their immense fortunes, the billionaire class is doing all they can to stop Prop 40.
Sergey Brin and just a handful of his billionaire pals have poured more than $118 million into a single committee trying to kill Prop 40.
Pamela, they are outspending us nearly 4-to-1.
That is why we urgently need your help. This is a movement built by and for the working people of California, and of this nation. Will you join Bernie Sanders, Ro Khanna, and Chris Murphy as a supporter of the first Billionaire Tax, with a $10, $20, or even $50 contribution?
Think about what billionaires paying their fair share in taxes could do for America. The revenue this tax would raise could keep hospitals open. It could hire teachers, and fix roads. And it would set the stage for billionaire taxes in other states across the country.
But instead of paying their fair share in taxes, billionaires are paying for a flood of TV ads. They're trying to tell voters that asking the ultra rich to pay their fair share is some kind of catastrophe.
But make no mistake, it is more than fair, and it's no catastrophe. It's a long-awaited correction that working people have been crying out for and rightly deserve. Our economic system is broken. It has allowed a handful of people to accumulate levels of wealth near-unheard of across the spectrum of human history, and it cannot go on.
This is exactly what Sen. Sanders warned us about when the Supreme Court handed down Citizens United — that a handful of billionaires would use their unimaginable wealth to drown out working people and bend our democracy to their will. That's what oligarchy looks like. And right now, it's happening in California.
Enough is enough.
We will never match their money. After all, that is the exact goal of the post-Citizens United world. But there are millions more of us than there are of them. Nurses. Home care workers. Renters. Students. Retirees. Parents who are one medical bill away from disaster.
When we organize, knock on doors, call our neighbors, and talk to our coworkers, working people can defeat a rigged system.
Organizing takes resources. Your financial support trains volunteers, runs phone banks and text programs, and puts organizers at doors in every corner of California. Will you chip in $27 right now to help working people out-organize the billionaire class?
When Sen. Sanders came to Los Angeles to rally for Prop 40, he said it plainly: "The billionaire class cannot have it all."
But they are trying to have it all, Pamela.
So it's up to us to take back democracy, reform our campaign finance system, and build an economy that works for all of us, not just the top 1%.
In solidarity,
