Pamela, Big Oil has raked in massive profits for decades while passing the real costs of their pollution onto the rest of us: higher energy bills; bigger health care bills to treat asthma, lung disease, and cancer; more impacts to our air, water, and food.
This isn’t news to anyone who reads these emails but, now, new research is putting an astonishing number on just one piece of that damage: Big Oil’s emissions drove half of the water losses impacting the American West in the past 10 years.
So, now, when we see headline after headline about how Lake Mead and Lake Powell are reaching all-time lows, we know exactly who is to blame.
Big Oil continues to steal our resources to make their stakeholders billions, and it’s time for them to be held accountable.
The fossil fuel industry’s impact cannot be overstated. It means less water flowing into rivers and reservoirs. Less water for farms and communities. Hotter, drier conditions that increase wildfire risk. And in some rural and low-income communities, declining water quality, dry wells, and higher costs just to pump the water that remains.
Already this year, California farmers have reported over $800 million in losses thanks to drought and extreme weather. When drought and extreme heat devastate crops, farmers lose income and families can feel the consequences at the grocery store. When groundwater drops, community water systems can face higher pumping costs that get passed along to customers. When wildfires, heat waves, and extreme weather strike, families, local governments, and taxpayers are left paying to recover.
That’s the fossil fuel economy in a nutshell: Big Oil profits. We pay the price.
And they want to keep it that way.
For decades, fossil fuel companies have fought tooth and nail to evade any accountability while continuing to pollute. They made sure to donate to Donald Trump’s 2024 reelection campaign. Now, the industry is backing efforts that could give them immunity from being held responsible for the climate damage they cause.
But, our families deserve access to clean air and water. To affordable food that won’t poison us. To safety and protection from extreme weather. To an economy that puts people first, not giant corporate polluters. Take action today.
Thanks for being in this fight,
Climate Power
