Hey Pamela,
There’s an important opportunity to make real change in Kansas right now. Governor Laura Kelly can commute all death sentences before her term expires in January. We need your help to push her to act.
Here's the thing: Kansas hasn't executed anyone in 60+ years. In fact, throughout the state’s history, governors from both political parties have used their clemency powers to commute death sentences.
Despite this history, the state is still spending millions of taxpayer dollars on a deeply dysfunctional death row system that hasn't improved public safety. In Kansas, death penalty trials cost taxpayers 3-4x more than comparable cases.
As support for capital punishment continues to drop across the country, it's clear that Kansas does not need an expensive system that fails to deter crime. What Kansas needs is resources to keep communities safe: mental health programs, violence prevention, education, job training, crime labs, and services for victims of crime.
Kansas deserves better. Add your name to demand change.
Commuting all death sentences would address the system's deep flaws and send a powerful message to Kansans that it's time to consider repealing the death penalty. Governor Kelly's leadership on this issue could be a beacon to others across the country.
If you agree that Governor Kelly should commute all death sentences, add your name to the petition.
Every signature counts. Let's show the Governor that people in Kansas and across the country are watching.
In solidarity,
U.S. Campaign to End the Death Penalty
