Dear MoveOn member,
On Sunday, news broke that House Speaker Mike Johnson plans to move forward on the SAVE Act—Donald Trump's sweeping voter suppression bill that would disenfranchise up to 21 million voters.1,2
Johnson made no effort to hide the fact that the Republicans' bill targets Democrats. He admitted the bill will have effects "particularly, frankly, in these blue states."3
MoveOn has been working for months to put pressure on members of Congress to reject what historians say would be the worst attack on voting rights ever.4 Now, with Johnson trying to force the bill through Congress once again, we have to go all out to stop this.
Can you chip in $9 to help MoveOn's big, final push to stop the SAVE Act voter suppression bill and protect America's free and fair elections? (If you have saved your payment information with ActBlue, your donation will go straight through.)
Last week, even Republicans thought that the SAVE Act wasn't going to be passed. Senator Thom Tillis said, "Unless they do the work to get to the 60 votes, they know it’s dead."5
But Johnson's plan "to try one more time on a budget reconciliation bill" changes everything.6
Reconciliation is a special way for Congress to pass legislation on taxes, spending, and the debt limit, and a reconciliation bill follows different rules.
To pass a bill under reconciliation, only a narrow majority of 50 votes is required (with the vice president breaking a tie)—rather than the normal 60 votes required to overcome a filibuster and get a bill through the Senate.7
This could be our last chance to stop what historians call the worst attack on voting rights in American history. Will you donate $9 right now to help us stop Trump and Johnson's extreme voter suppression bill? (If you have saved your payment information with ActBlue, your donation will go straight through.)
Andra, the SAVE Act is about partisan voter suppression. If it passes, voters would be required to show military service papers, a birth certificate, or a passport—with a matching current photo ID. If you don't have those things, have changed your name, or have moved recently, you can't vote.
This would especially impact lower-income voters, students and young people, transgender voters, immigrants, and women who’ve changed their last name after getting married—all people that historically have largely voted for Democrats.8
If we don't stop the SAVE Act now, tens of millions of voters would will be disenfranchised this fall, and each year after.9
Chip in to help MoveOn stop the SAVE Act in this make-or-break moment. (If you have saved your payment information with ActBlue, your donation will go straight through.)
We have to pull together all of our resources, energy, and commitment to stop the Senate from passing the bill.
Thanks for all you do.
