Mississippi’s new voter suppression law:

Will you help elect voting rights champion Scott Colom and strengthen our voter protection work?

NEW: GOP Governor of Mississippi Signs Voter Suppression Bill Into Law

Pamela, it’s no wonder Mississippi Republicans are scared: The tide is turning in the Magnolia State:

  • In 2023, the Democratic candidate for governor only lost by about 3.2%.
  • Last year, we supported partners on the ground to help break the GOP supermajority in the State Senate and flip nine key municipal seats from red to blue.
  • And this year, the Republican U.S. senator up for re-election is a consistent underperformer up against a strong challenger.

We’re proud to endorse Scott Colom — a voting rights champion, Democratic District Attorney, and seventh-generation Mississippian — for U.S. Senate, and we’ll do everything we can to power him to victory this November.

Voters are ready to make their voices heard. And that’s exactly what Mississippi Republicans are afraid of. They’ve just passed a harsh new voter suppression law in the state legislature called the SHIELD Act, which will make it significantly harder for U.S. citizens to register — particularly Mississippians living in rural communities, married women, young Mississippians, and Mississippians with disabilities.

Republicans are trying so hard to suppress the vote because they’re worried about being held accountable in free and fair elections. We’ll keep working with a pro-democracy coalition in Mississippi to power voter protection efforts, which are now even more critical. Will you split a donation between Fair Fight and Scott Colom’s campaign for U.S. Senate today to help show that we aren’t backing down?

The new so-called “SHIELD” Act places an undue burden on voters to prove their identity, but Mississippi already has a system to verify voters’ citizenship. This new legislation would add extra steps — requiring certain people trying to register to vote to show costly documents to prove they are U.S. citizens, like a birth certificate or a passport.

There is no evidence that non-citizens are registered or vote in Mississippi elections. But these additional requirements would make it incredibly difficult for U.S. citizens to register.

Approximately 80% of Mississippians do not have a passport, and many residents do not have easy access to their birth certificate. In order to get a new birth certificate, someone would have to travel all the way to Jackson or wait for potentially weeks to get it in the mail.

Really, the new law is a “shield” for politicians who want to suppress the vote because they’re afraid to try winning elections fair and square.

But with our voting rights partners in the South, we are fighting back against the SHIELD Act and together, fighting to protect the freedom to vote. We’ve seen how new investments, ongoing organizing, and dedicated voter protection work can transform states like Georgia. And as we support pro-democracy partners in Mississippi, we know that we can build real pro-voter political power.

Help defend voting rights and send Scott Colom to the Senate by splitting a donation between Scott Colom and Fair Fight. We have a real fighting chance to elect a voting rights champion to represent Mississippi — your split contribution can help make that happen.

In solidarity,

The Fair Fight Team
