You’re not imagining it, Pamela. Our democracy is being tested on several fronts right now:

• Mid-decade redrawing of congressional maps.
• Legislation that would require millions of Americans to cut through unreasonable amounts of bureaucratic red tape just to register to vote. 
• Administration-approved lists of voters allowed to cast a ballot by mail. 
• Rumors of plans to deploy ICE agents to polling locations.

It’s not a coincidence. All of this is orchestrated by politicians in power to try to cherry-pick who gets to have a say in our country’s electoral process. They don’t want to face the will of the American people because they fear the outcome. Their plan is to limit who gets to participate and, in turn, weaken democracy itself.

The good news is that polls tell us that Americans see how cynical and deeply un-American those ideas are. But just because the principles we hold dear are essential to the entire idea of America, it is by no means certain that our side will prevail. Our history is rife with examples of ugly politics and anti-democracy leaders taking us backward.

Representative democracy must not be taken for granted. 

Like so many generations before us, it is our turn to fight for what we believe in — to pick up the baton from the leaders of the past and continue what I like to call our unfinished march for justice, equality, and freedom. 

This is what Redistricting Action was built for. President Obama and I saw the rise of extreme, anti-democracy forces in our country. We knew we needed to organize a movement capable of pushing back when the threat was most urgent.
