Pamela,
Hard to believe it, but we still live in a country where thousands of people are killed a year because of assault weapons. Since the federal assault weapons ban expired in 2004, the number of high-fatality mass shootings per year has tripled and the number of deaths has quadrupled.
Right now, only 10 states have bans on assault weapons and just two of those states prevent the sale or manufacture of these deadly weapons. It’s long past time for state legislatures to step in where the federal government has failed. Tell your state representatives to pass a comprehensive assault weapons ban now.
In just the first month of 2026 alone, 1,000 people were killed by shooters using assault weapons. This is something that can be easily stopped.
And we’ve seen states take action. This year, Virginia’s House and Senate have passed bans on assault weapons. Virginia’s progress can be replicated across the country.
We’ve been waiting for 22 years for Congress to reinstate the expired assault weapons ban and we can’t wait any longer. Lives are on the lines.
That’s why we need our state legislatures to take action where our federal government has chosen not to. Tell your representatives it’s time to pass a comprehensive assault weapons ban in your state now.
In solidarity,
Mike Phelan
