SIGN NOW: Stop Trump’s politically motivated attacks on the civil rights movement. Demand the DOJ drop charges against the SPLC – and urge Congress to stand up for our rights >>
Pamela, for over 55 years, our partners at the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) have confronted the ugliest parts of our country and its history head-on: exposing the Ku Klux Klan, neo-Nazis, and other violent extremists who threaten our multiracial democracy.
Now, the Trump Administration is painting a target on their back with sham criminal charges.
This is a moment for the majority of Americans – who reject MAGA’s hateful agenda and are proud of our struggle for justice – to speak out.
The truth is, Donald Trump and Stephen Miller want to unleash the full force of government on any American who doesn’t agree with them. That’s why Common Cause raised the alarm last October about their “NSPM-7” directive – their promise to criminalize anyone who defends our civil rights, exposes hate, or challenges their power.
Now, they’re following through on that threat. They want to make an example of the SPLC and scare anyone who stands on the side of justice and civil rights.
And if they get away with it, they’re not going to stop there. As James Baldwin once said, “For, if they take you in the morning, they will be coming for us that night.” [1] Even if you're not the current target, it’s only a matter of time until you’re next.
That’s why we won’t be intimidated into silence. Common Cause is demanding the DOJ drop this baseless case against the SPLC, urging the Senate Judiciary Committee to conduct strong oversight, and calling on members of Congress to do everything in their power to hold this administration accountable for this attack.
Sign the Petition: Shut down Trump's attacks on the civil rights movement. Your voice can help create a wave of public outcry that those in power can’t ignore.
Pamela, our government has a duty to protect us from hate groups, white supremacists, and anyone else who threatens our right to a multiracial democracy where we’re all safe and free.
But Trump is turning that duty – and the rule of law – upside down. He began his term by pardoning nearly 1,600 Jan. 6 insurrectionists. [2] And right now, his administration is still going out of its way to wipe away Jan. 6 convictions for members of extremist groups like the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers. [3]
This is how democracies die: turning the government into a weapon against its own people, excusing violence when it's done in service of the regime in power, and targeting anyone who dares to object.
That’s what they tried – and failed – to do in cities like Minneapolis, Chicago, and Los Angeles. But they can’t target all of us at once, so they’re going after a few high-profile targets and hoping it’ll scare the rest of us into silence.
We need your help to speak out in solidarity – and STOP Trump’s campaign of intimidation.
Add your name: Stand with the SPLC, defend our democracy, and demand accountability – before Trump spreads this dangerous playbook even further.
Thanks for all you do,
The team at Common Cause
