Dear MoveOn member, We need to talk about one of the biggest silent partners behind ICE’s reign of terror over our communities: AT&T. The multibillion-dollar telecom giant is providing the communications, data analytics, and high-speed networks that allow ICE to act as swiftly as they do.1 So when you see horrific reports of a sexual assault survivor detained outside a courthouse, a 14-year-old girl ripped from her family, and peaceful observers being pepper-sprayed, know that AT&T is providing the digital infrastructure to make it happen.2,3,4 The corporation has already taken in $90.8 million of taxpayer dollars, and now the Department of Homeland Security is negotiating an extension through the year 2032.5 Andra, AT&T may be eyeing a big paycheck from the Trump administration, but its shareholders rely on individual subscribers to also make them multibillion-dollar profits. And AT&T customers are everywhere—there are 120 million of us who get our internet, wireless, and cable television from the telecommunications giant.6 That means, together we have real power as consumers to convince AT&T to drop the ICE contract—and gum up the works in Trump’s immigration terror campaign. We know that executives at a $120 billion corporation might not be moved by a moral argument alone—so we are going to make it financially unviable for them to continue enabling ICE’s violence. Your contribution today will help power a massive public pressure campaign to expose AT&T’s complicity in the ICE raids and cause consumers to speak up and (threaten to) break up with AT&T. We convinced Disney to reverse the firing of Jimmy Kimmel, Spotify to not renew contracts with DHS to air more ICE agent recruitment ads, and DirectTV to drop the propaganda machine One America Network from its lineup. With enough publicity and enough people behind us, we can convince AT&T to drop its ICE contract. We can’t overstate the impact this would have. ICE relies on technology companies for the infrastructure of deportation. If we break the link between Big Tech and rogue agencies, we undermine their ability to sow chaos in our communities.
