Dear MoveOn member,
On the same day a Custom and Border Protection agent murdered Alex Pretti in Minneapolis, Attorney General Pam Bondi sent a ransom note to Minnesota Governor Tim Walz. Bondi outlined a series of demands in exchange for pulling ICE out of the state, including giving the Trump administration access to the state's unredacted voter rolls which contain voter's private data like driver license and Social Security numbers.1
Why does the Trump administration want this voting data so badly that they'd finally pull ICE out of Minnesota once and for all? It's the same reason Trump colluded with Republican allies to redraw maps in Texas and Missouri. It's part of President Trump's desperate power grab to maintain control of Congress at any cost.
It's critical that Gov. Walz and governors across the country stand strong and refuse to give the Trump administration our sensitive voter information! If you agree, add your name to the petition.
With the midterm elections coming up in November, it's clear they are using violence and intimidation to exploit states and advance their agenda. Experts are greatly concerned about how private voter data in the hands of this administration full of election deniers, including the president himself, could be manipulated to undermine future election results.2 It's sickening.
The Trump administration released thousands of untrained, armed agents into Minnesota, creating a deadly crisis in Minneapolis—and now, it is trying to extort Minnesotan officials to end it. So far Gov. Walz hasn't acquiesced, largely dismissing the demands, and Minnesota's secretary of state backed him up, calling the request "deeply disturbing" and in violation of state and federal law.3 But with mounting pressure and continued strain on the state, we need to keep up the pressure to make sure Gov. Walz and state leadership across the country resist the Trump administration's attempts to seize our private voter data.
Will you sign the petition to urge Minnesotan officials and other Democratic governors across the country to refuse to hand over private voter data to the Trump administration?
For months the Trump administration has been trying to force states, including Minnesota, to hand over their private voter registration information to build the largest set of national voter roll data ever collected.4 While some Republican states have complied, even they have not gone so far as to provide unredacted voter rolls as requested. Meanwhile, Democratic run states have refused to release any information and are currently being sued by the Department of Justice for not giving in to this unprecedented request. This escalation clearly demonstrates that the administration is not giving up.
SIgn the petition now to demand that Democrats don't back down and protect our voter data and future elections!
Minnesota, under Democrat Gov. Walz's leadership, is among the most progressive states in the country. The state boasts the country's most progressive tax system, a newly launched universal paid family leave policy, expanded workers rights and voting rights, strong investment in public education, and free breakfast and lunch for all public school students It has enshrined abortion rights into law, offers drivers licenses for all residents regardless of legal status, and more.5,6,7And as Americans struggle more and more to afford basic goods, this is the type of government investment we need. And guess who is afraid of that? Trump.
States like Minnesota serve as a direct contrast to the fearmongering, terror, and scarcity that the Trump administration has built their base around. They serve as models for what governance can look like when we center people and not profits, and what it looks like when we fund public services and schools versus Trump's militarized and inhumane ICE raids. That is why Trump is sowing chaos, making a power grab for our data, and laying the groundwork to sabotage free and fair elections.
With backlash mounting against Trump's violent immigration raids, his chaotic tariff policy, his reckless foreign policy agenda that could bring us to the brink of another forever war, Trump knows he can't help Republicans win the midterms on their own merits. It is clear he's grasping for power at the expense of our privacy, rights, and the Constitution.
Add your name to the petition to urge Gov. Walz and governors across the country to not give in to Trump's threats and to protect private voter data! Our future elections could depend on it.
Thanks for all you do.
