Pamela, this weekend we witnessed another killing at the hands of Trump's brutal immigration forces. Alex Pretti was an ICU nurse at a VA hospital, assisting neighbors bravely resisting ICE and CBP's lawless violence in Minneapolis. His last words before CBP agents shot him on Saturday were, "Are you okay?"
We're not okay. People are devastated. Grieving. Outraged. If you're one of them, you're far from alone. And as we reckon with the horrors in Minneapolis, and the bold, inspired response from tens of thousands of Minnesotans who are showing us — in subzero temperatures — how to press on, we are building momentum like never before to defund Trump's hateful deportation machine.
This is a watershed moment, and what happens next will be significant.
In a matter of days, the Senate is expected to vote on funding for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), which includes ICE and CBP. Republicans barely managed to pass the DHS appropriations bill in the House, and they face an even steeper path in the Senate, where they need 60 votes.
An outpouring of messages from constituents like you can help shore up the votes needed to reject further funding for DHS.

ICE and CBP agents think their violence is acceptable because of the tens of billions of dollars Congress shoveled into their budgets last year — funds on top of their already sizable annual appropriations.
There's a long list for Congress to tackle in the coming days, including revoking those funds, unmasking ICE and CBP, and ensuring agents are held accountable for their actions. But first things first: At MINIMUM, Congress should block legislation that further funds these out-of-control federal agents.
The good news is that cracks are emerging. Yesterday, in an emergency meeting, Senate Democrats reportedly agreed to block the DHS funding bill unless it is significantly reformed.
It's a welcome step in the right direction, but the damage remains undeniable. Unjustified, state-sponsored violence that took the lives of Renee Good, Alex Pretti, and too many more. Agents that refuse to hand a two-year-old over to her mother as they detain her father and then ship them both to a Texas detention center. Preschoolers, like Liam Conejo Ramos, who they use as bait to detain their parents.
Yet even amidst all that, Senate Republicans aren't going to let DHS funding go without a fight.
We say: Enough is enough. ICE and CBP agents cannot act as judge, jury, and executioner in our streets — and the Senate must immediately halt funding for ICE and CBP's deadly operations. To make that happen, it'll take all of us relentlessly speaking out. That's where you have a role to play, Pamela.
Tell your Senators: NO funding for ICE and CBP! Reject the DHS appropriations bill.
Thank you for working for peace,
The Win Without War team
P.S. Today at 8:00 PM ET / 5:00 PM PT, Indivisible and movement partners are holding an emergency call covering the latest updates on ICE and CBP's operations, talking through our right to document and record law enforcement, and discussing how we can continue to take action.
