Pamela: Last week, ICE agents raided Rep. Ilhan Omar’s DC residence, seizing her phone and subpoenaing her family members as part of an investigation into her citizenship — one that could result in her denaturalization and deportation.
Using the full might of the federal government to go after a political opponent is nothing short of an abuse of power.
This high-profile spectacle is just one example of the harassment to which ICE and CBP have subjected immigrant communities across the country, and these actions should alarm everyone who believes in democracy, justice, and government accountability.
Someone must answer for the escalating abuses, wanton violence, and politically motivated attacks by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Decisions and culture start at the top. That’s why we’re calling on Congress to take up impeachment proceedings against DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin.
| ACT NOW |
A politically motivated raid against Rep. Omar — just weeks before the midterms when she’s up for reelection — is unprecedented and unacceptable. But it echoes ICE and CBP’s repeated attacks on Somali Americans and the Minnesota communities which Rep. Omar represents in Congress, including the deployment of thousands of armed federal agents to the Twin Cities and the murders of Alex Pretti and Renée Good earlier this year.
Now, DHS Secretary Mullin would accept orders from Trump’s Department of Justice as it pursues what Attorney General Todd Blanche called the "largest denaturalization effort in modern history.”[1]
We’ve seen the kind of influence calls for impeachment can bring to bear with Trump appointees before, Pamela. Kristi Noem was shown the door earlier this year after outrage grew over her role as DHS Secretary.
Lawmakers must publicly commit to pursuing accountability for Sec. Mullin and press for action as soon as possible. Will you make your voice heard today by sending a message?
Tell your members of Congress to impeach Secretary Markwayne Mullin and hold DHS accountable.
Thank you for working for peace,
The Win Without War team
