Pamela, voting by mail is at serious risk.
For months now, President Trump and anti-democracy forces have waged a relentless campaign against a method of voting that is secure and commonplace in advanced democracies all over the globe.
Even though the president himself has routinely voted by mail, he’s falsely claiming it’s “corrupt as hell” and that we need to crack down to combat “widespread voting fraud.”
Let’s be clear: cases of mail voting fraud are virtually non-existent. Fraud is observed in only 0.000043% of total mail ballots cast — that’s roughly four out of every 10 million mail votes.
Nevertheless, the president signed an executive order earlier this year, which directs the United States Postal Service to only send absentee ballots to voters on "state citizenship lists" approved by the Department of Homeland Security. For obvious reasons, this should be deemed illegal, but so far, the courts have not yet blocked this order.
As we move closer to the midterms, these attacks on voting by mail are expected to intensify. For no justifiable reason whatsoever, voting could become much harder for millions of ordinary Americans, including service members stationed abroad, students away at college, and those disabled or home-bound. And no matter what the attack is, whenever things change, we will need to help reach voters and make sure they know their options for voting.
Thank you for protecting democracy now and for the future,
Ted Corcoran
