Pamela, as Mara Gay wrote in The New York Times, the recent gutting of the Voting Rights Act and the rampant redistricting efforts that have followed are a betrayal of Black Americans, and those who believe in fair representation in America.
To see this play out side by side with flashy, over-the-top celebrations of America’s 250th birthday is particularly gut-wrenching.
Many warned that dismantling the Voting Rights Act would open the floodgates for states to pass extreme map redraws that silence Black and Brown voters.
In just two months, they’ve pushed new maps across the South: Florida. Tennessee. Louisiana. Alabama.
As A.G. Holder put it, this rampant racial gerrymandering “is consistent with the worst of what the federal government has done” since Reconstruction.
The extremists behind this playbook are betting that they can outmaneuver democracy and outrun accountability. It’s on us to prove them wrong.
