In Trump’s FY27 budget, he wants to eliminate the Continuum of Care program. For those of you unfamiliar with it, it’s one of the most important federal programs keeping people in permanent housing after they’ve experienced homelessness.
Right now, almost 218,000 people live in permanent housing funded by this program. And if Trump gets his way, those people could lose their homes and return to homelessness.
Housing is a human right, Pamela. Having affordable, ample housing is the hallmark of a healthy society. Without a program like this, hundreds of thousands of Americans will be without a roof over their heads. Demand Congress to fully fund protections for people across the country.
We all know that homelessness response systems are already under-resourced. Every week, about 17,500 people enter homelessness for the first time. And as of 2024, homelessness response systems only had enough housing for only 16% of households in shelters.
These cuts are already coming at a bad time; millions of people across the country are struggling with the costs of basic needs, including housing. The Trump administration doesn’t care about the people they’re supposed to serve and protect.
Now, Congress must provide $5.1 billion for HUD’s Homeless Assistance Grants in the next fiscal year, including $4.6 billion for the critical Continuum of Care program. Tell your representatives to fully fund the Homeless Assistance Grants and protections for people at risk of being pushed back into homelessness.
In solidarity,
Mike Phelan
