Let’s be honest about what’s happening

At this moment in American history 

Pamela, it’s Dr. Carol Anderson with Fair Fight Action, and I’m writing to you now because the stakes at this moment in American history are unmistakable. We’re witnessing the rise of a modern-day Jim Crow. Brick by brick, extremists are building a wall to keep Black and brown voters out of democracy. The Supreme Court, once again, has gutted the Voting Rights Act — now allowing states to draw voting maps that deny equal representation to voters of color. Right-wing justices are trying to hide behind the idea that racially discriminatory maps are “race-neutral.” They seem to think we forget our history. During Jim Crow, white supremacist lawmakers used racially neutral language for policies that were clearly racially targeted — such as literacy tests and poll taxes. Now, legislatures and governors across the South have raced to draw maps that silence Black and brown voters. States continue passing laws that restrict the freedom to vote. And Donald Trump threatens to “take over” elections while still spreading disinformation about the 2020 results. This is not isolated activity. It is a coordinated theory of power: centralize control, discredit local administration, purge voter rolls, narrow who gets to participate, and silence the voices of minority communities to once again cement one-party rule. The South has been the testing ground for new attacks on the freedom to vote. But it is also the launching pad for how we defend democracy. In Georgia, throughout the South, and around the country, Fair Fight Action continues working to make sure every voice gets heard in our democracy by: Organizing against rigged voting maps that silence voters of color — helping stop, for now, Governor Brian Kemp’s attempt to ram through new racist maps Advocating against restrictive voting laws — helping prevent any voter suppression laws from passing in Georgia for the past two years Supporting state-level Voting Rights Acts and other proactive policies to secure the freedom to vote — going on offense as well as defense Spreading timely, accurate voting information so voters know how and when to cast their ballots — critical work for 2026 and beyond Every donation helps fight back against a systemic, multi-pronged assault on our freedom to participate in democracy.
