Pamela,
Big news: Representative Ayanna Pressley and Senator Dick Durbin have reintroduced a bill that would end the death penalty for federal crimes.
Why this matters right now:
The bill pushes back against the expansion of the death penalty. The Trump administration is pushing to expand the death penalty. This bill gives us a way to say no.
People are already asking questions. Tennessee recently botched the execution of Tony Carruthers, raising serious concerns about the death penalty. This bill brings national attention to the many problems with capital punishment.
We can grow support. The bill already has 23 co-sponsors in the House and 17 in the Senate. When you write to your representatives, you help identify allies across the political spectrum.
Send your message to Congress: End the federal death penalty now.
The facts are clear: The death penalty doesn't make us safer. It doesn't stop crime, and it wastes tax money that could fund programs proven to reduce violence and strengthen communities.
As long as the death penalty exists, innocent people could be executed. At least 200 people have been wrongfully convicted and sentenced to death in this country. Some have been executed before their innocence was proven.
The death penalty is not applied fairly. It's disproportionately used against people with severe mental illnesses, intellectual disabilities, or brain injuries and people who survived childhood trauma and abuse.
And when it comes to death sentencing, where a crime happens often outweighs what crime was committed. Two identical crimes in nearby counties can lead to completely different sentences based on who the prosecutor is, the race of the victim, and whether the defendant had money for a strong defense.
If you agree that the death penalty is arbitrary and biased, send a letter to your Member of Congress to support the Federal Death Penalty Prohibition Act.
In solidarity,
U.S. Campaign to End the Death Penalty
