Hey Pamela,
Some of the biggest names in rap music have come together to ask the U.S. Supreme Court to stop the execution of James Broadnax on April 30. Their argument? Prosecutors used rap lyrics as evidence.

James was sent to death row for killing Stephen Swan and Matthew Butler outside their Dallas music studio during a robbery in 2008. Just last month, his cousin Demarius Cummings came forward and stated that he, not James, was responsible for the double murders. DNA evidence on the murder weapon supports Demarius’s confession.
Thousands of people across the country are calling on the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles and Governor Abbott to stop James’s execution. If you agree that Texas authorities should intervene, add your name to the petition.
For years, James’s legal team has raised serious concerns with his trial. Dallas County prosecutors removed every Black juror so that James was convicted by a jury that was almost entirely white.
Prosecutors used James’s handwritten rap lyrics to convince jurors he would be a continuing threat to society. They exploited racist stereotypes about Black music and culture. They turned creative expression into a death warrant.
Many musical artists are speaking out. Travis Scott, Killer Mike, T.I., Young Thug, Fat Joe, and N.O.R.E. all signed legal briefs supporting James. They say he was sentenced to death partly because of his art.
James needs the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles to recommend a reprieve—and Governor Abbott to grant it. They won't act unless we make this injustice impossible to ignore. Sign the petition to urge the Texas Pardons and Paroles Board and Governor Abbott to stop James’s execution.
In solidarity,
U.S. Campaign to End the Death Penalty
