Pamela, in just a little bit, we're going to ask you to donate in support of our campaign to remove President Trump from office. But before we do that, we want to level with you: we’re not likely to “win” anytime soon. That is, if “winning” means convincing Trump’s Cabinet – who he’s selected for personal loyalty, not qualifications or integrity – to remove him quickly. And the odds aren’t great that Republicans in Congress, who’ve spent all year dodging their constitutional responsibility to rein in this rogue executive, are suddenly going to see the light either. I’m writing to you today, Pamela, because this effort is important even if the people currently in charge fail us. You see, one of the most subtly destructive results of the Trump era is a massive lowering of standards: among the political class, in the media, and even among people who care about democracy like you and me. We see the barrage of attacks on our rights, scandal after scandal, brazen acts of corruption – and simply get overwhelmed. We grade this President and his party on a curve, and offenses that once would’ve merited months of breathless coverage, on the level of Iran-Contra or Whitewater or Enron, become just business as usual. And we’ll tell you this, Pamela – Donald Trump’s days as president are numbered, but if we let the bar for American leadership stay as low as he’s leaving it, our democracy’s as good as done. That’s why, here at Common Cause, we’re not going to accept any less than what we deserve.
