Dispelling myths around voting by mail

We see beyond the false claims and need your help to protect access to voting for every American.

Pamela, President Trump is ramping up his efforts to undermine our elections. His latest attack? An executive order directing the Department of Homeland Security to create a “state citizenship list” in order to restrict mail-in ballots.

Trump claims that this is an attempt to stop “widespread voting fraud” — a laughably false notion. I’ll tell you what it actually is: unconstitutional and dangerously anti-voter. The Constitution grants no explicit authority to the executive branch to control elections.

Prohibiting voting by mail is just one of many ways anti-democracy forces are trying to make it harder for ordinary Americans to exercise their rights. With your support for Redistricting Action, we plan to fight back against these forces and protect every voter.

They’re not just attacking free and fair elections, they’re openly lying to justify it. Let’s dispel a few of the biggest myths being peddled about mail-in voting:

MYTH: The United States is the “only country” with voting by mail.
FACT: This couldn’t be more false. Globally, 12 countries allow all voters to cast ballots through the mail, and another 22 countries allow it in certain circumstances. In the U.S., voting by mail has existed since the Civil War, so it’s not a new innovation or unique to our elections.

MYTH: Voter fraud is easier with mail-in voting.
FACT: Anti-democracy folks like to claim this, but the facts tell a different story. Cases of mail voting fraud are very rare — accounting for only 0.000043% of total mail ballots cast, or about four cases out of every 10 million mail votes. That’s because we have precautions in place to prevent fraud — 47 states and Washington, D.C., have ballot tracking, which makes fraud even less likely. Moreover, we know this isn’t a concern to President Trump, because he himself just voted by mail in a Florida election a few weeks ago. This is nothing but a shameless power-grab by making it harder to vote.

What voting by mail does is ensure that no American loses their ability to vote because they are traveling, away at college, serving in the military, or are disabled or home-bound.

Make a gift today to strengthen our response to voter suppression nationwide, amidst these egregious attempts to strip away access to voting, so we can help protect voting rights for all Americans.

Thank you for defending democracy,

John Bisognano
