Pamela, we've all heard a lot about the so-called “SAVE America Act” and how it threatens to make it harder for millions of Americans to vote.
But legislation is wonky. It’s not always easy to grasp what it would actually mean if the SAVE Act becomes law. So let’s dive in:
It starts by mandating in-person registration with documentary proof of citizenship. Which means:
- A woman who changed her name at marriage would have to present a birth certificate and a marriage certificate at an election office to prove that she has the right to vote.
- A person with disabilities who wants to register to vote online or mail in a registration application would no longer have the opportunity to do either.
- A rural Alaskan would have to take a flight to one of the state's handful of election offices in a major city just to get registered.
- Even someone just moving across town would have to go in person to their election office and present original or certified documentation to make any voter registration change.
None of this would “save” America or preserve election integrity. In fact, it does the opposite — reducing the voice the American people have in the direction our country takes. They want lower voter participation because that’s how anti-democracy forces think they can win.
The next vote on the SAVE Act could happen when the Senate returns to session this month — we’ve defeated it twice already, but we can’t let up now.
Thank you for protecting democracy,
