Pamela,
Last Thursday, the Vera Institute of Justice gathered with friends, supporters, and partners at our 2026 Annual Dinner. Whether you were in the room or following from afar, we wanted to take a moment to reflect on the evening and what it means for the work ahead.
We honored Nick Turner, who recently stepped down after 12 years leading Vera through a period of significant challenge and progress. Senator Cory Booker spoke to Nick's legacy with characteristic thoughtfulness, and Nick left us with a charge that speaks to this moment as much as any:
"Hope is a discipline. It is born of doing. We all just need to do the next good thing, and the next, and the next. That is how hope grows. Keep betting on Vera."
We also marked the beginning of a new chapter with the introduction of Insha Rahman as Vera's new president. Insha brings deep experience in justice reform and a clear-eyed understanding of what this work demands—which is exactly what the moment calls for.
While the evening celebrated leadership and transition, the dinner also centered the people and programs at the heart of our mission.
The landscape we're operating in is not easy. But Vera has never done its best work in easy times. With more than 60 years of experience, a talented team, and the continued commitment of people like you, we are ready for what's ahead.
Onward,
Vera Institute of Justice
