Pamela,
It’s June. That means hurricane season just started, and experts are warning that Americans will face multiple major storms. But, we are not even close to prepared -- thanks, Trump!
Instead of preparing communities for the growing threat of extreme weather this summer, Donald Trump spent the last year gutting the very agencies Americans rely on to stay safe. He’s put our communities in harm’s way.
ADD YOUR NAME: Disaster relief is a lifeline. We cannot allow Trump to put our communities in danger.
As climate-fueled disasters grow more frequent and more severe, Trump has cut weather forecasting, disaster response, and emergency preparedness programs that save lives.
His administration fired and planned to fire thousands of workers at NOAA and the National Weather Service, including hurricane hunters, flood gauge operators, and severe storm researchers. Nearly half of weather forecast offices were left critically understaffed.
At the same time, Trump has weakened FEMA right before what is expected to be an active hurricane season. Trump even pushed more of the financial burden for disaster recovery onto states and local communities that cannot afford it.
And we’re already seeing the devastating consequences.
Last summer, catastrophic floods in Texas killed at least 130 people, while local National Weather Service offices had vacancies in key roles. This spring, deadly tornadoes in Michigan caught forecasters by surprise, prompting calls for an investigation into forecasting failures.
These cuts are also fueling a growing insurance crisis across the country. Home insurance rates are rising nearly three times faster than inflation, and insurers are pulling out of disaster-prone states altogether. Working families and communities of color are being hit the hardest.
We cannot afford more political games when lives, homes, and livelihoods are on the line, Pamela.
Add your name today if you agree FEMA should be strengthened, disaster response funding should be restored, and communities should get the support they need before and after disaster strikes.
Families deserve leaders who will invest in science, preparedness, and public safety -- not reckless cuts that leave communities to face disasters alone.
Thanks for taking action,
Climate Power
