It’s another day that ends in “y” so that means Trump is attacking one of our storied institutions. This time, it’s our public education system.
In his latest budget to Congress, he wants to pull billions of dollars out of public education while eliminating programs and weakening the protections schools rely on to service students. Trump truly doesn’t care about our kids.
Congress can reject this budget and protect both our kids and public education. Tell your members of Congress to reject this budget proposal today.
Our public education system is what makes America great. And now because of these cuts, schools will be forced to stretch limited dollars further each year, leading to staff reductions, fewer services, and fewer opportunities for students.
But the catch is that because wealthier districts can rely more heavily on property taxes to fund schools, cuts would be felt unequally amongst rural districts, Tribal schools, segregated urban systems, and high-poverty communities.
While Trump wants to cut this budget, his proposal also reduces the capacity of the Department of Education itself, limiting its ability to carry out its core responsibilities and support children and schools nationwide.
If Trump gets his way, public education would become a system that serves wealthy communities and leaves the majority of children – and communities – behind. Congress is still making decisions about priorities right now, so there’s still a chance for them to do the right thing.
Tell your members of Congress today to reject Trump’s budget proposal and protect both our kids and public education.
In solidarity,
Mike Phelan
