Re: Thoughts after the SCOTUS ruling

A message about where we stand

Hi Pamela,

I’m not going to sugarcoat the new SCOTUS ruling in Louisiana v. Callais.

It dismantled one of the most important protections that kept politicians from rigging voting maps for their own power and silencing voters of color in our diverse country.

And this decision is not an accident — it’s the endgame of a decades‑long strategy by Republican politicians and billionaire donors to dismantle our voting rights, advance an agenda of white supremacy, block our votes, and lock the people out of power, especially targeting the South where most Black Americans live.

So as we fight back, we have to zoom out and take that entire picture into account.

Last month, when the Fair Fight team convened for an all-staff retreat, we got to review the broad current landscape of threats to voting rights, discuss lessons learned from recent fights, and map out our strategies to protect the freedom to vote.

And I got to reflect on how this whole pro-democracy movement — which you help power — is more than ready to meet this incredibly difficult moment.

We founded Fair Fight to tackle times like these. After Georgia voters faced significant difficulties in the 2018 elections, we launched this organization to help make sure every eligible voter can register, cast their ballot, and have it counted — always rooted in and focused on the South but with a national purview.

When the freedom to vote is under threat, we’re there to defend it — powering critical voter protection efforts, electing Democracy Champions to offices that play major roles in elections, and exposing and pushing back against attempts at voter suppression.

So even though our democracy is under enormous strain right now, I’m confident that together we can build a deeper and broader movement that will rise to this challenge.

But I want to be straightforward with you about what lies ahead.

Here are some of the key fights we’re facing, and how the pro-democracy movement plans to deliver victories for voters.

The aftermath of Louisiana v. Callais:
The Supreme Court has gutted another key plank of the Voting Rights Act, threatening to decimate fair representation for communities of color and let Republicans entrench one-party rule.

But our communities have never won anything by giving up, so we intend to use all of our tools to fight back. We have more power together — and when we come together to vote, to advocate and organize, working with a powerful coalition of litigators, leaders and allies across the political spectrum — we can slow, stop and mitigate the bad. We can still elect leaders who work for strong public schools, good jobs, and affordable healthcare and housing.

It’s time to generate massive resistance against attempts to rig maps for the 2026 elections. And we’ll continue working to generate massive turnout in November to combat the MAGA power grab.

The pro-democracy movement isn’t out of options. Blue‑state leaders can redraw maps to respond. State legislators can fight against discriminatory and unfair voting maps and file pro-voting rights bills. Communities can organize, raise awareness, and pressure lawmakers to reject discriminatory maps.

Remember: if your vote didn’t matter — they wouldn’t be working so hard to take it away.

The 2026 elections in Georgia, including this month’s State Supreme Court elections:
We’ve endorsed two Democracy Champions for the bench — Jen Jordan and Miracle Rankin — so we can add pro-voter, pro-freedom voices to a body with authority over elections challenges and state constitutional questions (including reproductive rights).

And through November, we’ll fight to flip the State House from red to blue, keep an election denier from winning the Secretary of State’s race, win critical local elections that determine who oversees elections, and re-elect Senator Jon Ossoff.

Trump’s executive order on mail voting (and what else he may try to push):
Our team has kept close tabs on the election deniers who’ve drafted executive order language for Trump, and on which pieces are already reflected in his attempt to restrict mail voting. That order is already getting challenged in the courts. By continuing to stay on top of new ways Trump could try to threaten voting rights, we help make sure the pro-democracy ecosystem is ready to respond to those measures as well.

No matter what comes next, your support helps make sure we’re able to respond to new threats right away and continue protecting the freedom to vote. If you can, please chip in today to help fuel the fights ahead.
