Hi, it’s Deb Haaland. No matter where I go, I am a proud Pueblo woman — and when I wear my mocs or my ribbon skirt, I’m reminded of the strength of our ancestors and the responsibility we carry forward.
From my ancestral homelands to the halls of Congress, I’ve worn my traditional clothing with pride, honoring where I come from and the people who made my journey possible. On the day I was sworn in as Secretary of the Interior, I wore my white moccasins and a handmade ribbon skirt adorned with butterflies, stars, and corn. At the White House Tribal Nations Summit, I wore my beaded moccasins in solidarity with Indigenous people across the country. And when I filed my petition to appear on New Mexico’s ballot for Governor, I wore my ribbon skirt to honor my ancestors at every step.
And now, in just days, I will hopefully stand on stage again — wearing my mocs and ribbon skirt — and become the Democratic nominee for Governor of New Mexico.
