All across the South, we are witnessing a stunning return to an ugly era most of us believed we’d left behind. Lawmakers are moving at break-neck speed to take voting power away from racial minorities.
Mere hours after the Supreme Court gutted key protections of the Voting Rights Act, politicians in several southern states were putting plans into motion. They see the ruling as a green light to grab power by eliminating districts where voters of color have had the opportunity to elect candidates of their choice.
Take a look at what Tennessee has done.
The map they passed just eight days after the Supreme Court decision erased the state’s only Black opportunity district — breaking up the city of Memphis into three districts.
Pamela, I never want to see our country go back to the days of Jim Crow. I believe that the American people are with me on that. And everyone can see what’s happening.
