Pamela: Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is quickly working to create an “AI-first” fighting force. To supercharge an already dangerous AI-powered war machine, the Army and Air Force are planning to build data centers spanning thousands of acres of military property in Texas, North Carolina, Utah, California, Arizona, and Georgia — and more could follow.
It’s all to advance the usage of AI in warfare; autonomous weapons systems, algorithms making life-or-death decisions, robots with the power to launch nuclear weapons.
We’re sounding the alarm: Unchecked AI has no place in weapons and war, and parasitic data centers have no place in our communities.
But Wall Street firms and private equity companies like the Carlyle Group and BlackRock are turning to the Pentagon to cash in on the AI boom, which is currently negotiating “exclusive” 50-year term leases of its property for the data centers.
To get lawmakers to pay attention and prevent more data centers from destroying land, water, and air to power AI warfare tomorrow, we need as many people as possible speaking out today.
Tell Congress: Block the Pentagon from building warfare-powering AI data centers!
| ACT NOW |
7-in-10 Americans oppose data centers being built in their communities, and it’s not hard to see why: Data centers jack up local electricity costs, waste millions of gallons of freshwater each day, and cause air, light, and noise pollution.
According to El Paso Matters, the three-gigawatt data center complex planned near Fort Bliss “would consume more electricity than all of El Paso Electric’s 460,000 customers combined.”[1] Researchers at Arizona State University found that heat pollution from data centers can increase temperatures in nearby neighborhoods by as much as 4°F — pushing power grids and people alike to new breaking points.[2]
The consequences of the Pentagon’s reckless pursuit of AI-powered warfare don’t end there.
AI and weapons are a recipe for mistakes, miscalculation, and escalation. Members of Congress are still awaiting answers on whether reliance on faulty AI targeting was to blame for a U.S. strike on a school in Minab, Iran, that killed 168 people.
Organized people power has successfully stopped the development of data centers before in communities across the country. That’s why we’re teaming up with 18 partners from across the movement to multiply our impact in sounding the alarm and demanding lawmakers take action.
Thank you for working for peace,
