Pamela,
Ballrooms. . . Reflecting pools. . . Triumphal arches. . .
Why is it that, at a time when Americans are having a harder and harder time getting by, millions of people are losing access to health care, and a reckless war is driving up the cost of pretty much everything, we’re sitting here talking about dyeing the Reflecting Pool, a billion-dollar golden ballroom, and a massive triumphal arch looming over Washington, D.C.?
The answer? A whole lot of leaders are extremely out of touch simply because they can be. Their districts are specially drawn to keep them in power — to avoid serious electoral challenges at all costs.
This is why fair maps are so critical to a functioning democracy.
The fact is, anti-democracy extremists know they’re unpopular. And Trump knows his approval rating is in the toilet. That’s why, instead of changing course on policy, they’re doing everything in their power to manipulate the maps — their plan to stay in power is to rig the midterms and thwart the will of the people.
And right now, this D.C. power grab has enormous momentum. The Supreme Court’s disastrous ruling on the Voting Rights Act has ushered in several new redraws in southern states, and the Virginia Supreme Court struck down the new map that voters just approved as a countermeasure to the redistricting crisis.
Redistricting Action is doing everything in our power to ensure that voters in every state can elect the representatives of their choosing this year — and every year.
