Pamela,

First: In 2018, Utah voters approved a ballot initiative establishing an independent redistricting commission to draw voting maps. 

Then: Utah lawmakers passed a gerrymandered map that violated that citizen-passed initiative. A judge threw out the gerrymandered map and implemented a new, fairer map. 

Now: Last month, Utah lawmakers voted to ceremonially object to the new court-ordered map and extend the filing deadline for congressional candidates running in the 2026 midterms — buying time to fight back against this fairer map. This week, the GOP-controlled legislature's lawyers filed a notice to appeal the case to the Utah Supreme Court. Anti-democracy forces are also collecting signatures to effectively reverse the 2018 initiative, and repeal Utah's ban on partisan gerrymandering. 

Let's review: The fair maps movement prevailed in court. The fair maps movement won at the ballot box. Utahns made it clear that politicians shouldn't get to cherry-pick their voters. And yet anti-democracy politicians are still not finished with their campaign to grab power by silencing voters.

The fair maps movement is challenging this in court to ensure all Utah residents have a voice in the next election and beyond. Meanwhile, Redistricting Action is pushing back on all fronts to make clear the American people won't abide with these blatant power grabs.
